Does Diabetes affect your Heart

Many of the people who have diabetes find it tiresome enough, but apart from it, diabetes can cause various other maladies including heart diseases. The main reason for this is that, people who have diabetes, have increased levels of the cholesterol LDL in their body. At the same time, it reduces the amount of HDL present in your body.

The function performed by HDL is transporting the LDL cholesterol that has been produced to other parts of the body. Thus, when HDL levels go below those that are required, LDL starts accumulating within your blood vessels. These deposits of LDL within your body can lead to clogging of your blood vessels and thus, can cause a heart attack.

Many scientific studies have shown that people with diabetes are 2 to 4 times more likely to have heart trouble than those without it. If you have diabetes, you can reduce the risk of heart attack by adopting a healthy lifestyle. This includes a healthy diet i.e. a one with lower amount of fats, regular exercise both to keep your body fit and to maintain a proper weight etc.

Thus, if you have diabetes, extra measures need to be taken to reduce the risk of heart disease.
