The Unreal Engine is a game engine developed by Epic Games, which is widely used for many console games for use in consoles such as the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 (PS3). The game engine was first developed for the first person shooter Unreal, which became a very popular game, and has been the basis for many popular games since.
